Sir Fusion of Energy and the Holy Grail
Given ever-approaching Peak Oil and worldwide concern over carbon emissions causing global warming the dream of clean, safe and bountiful energy becomes more intense. Fusion energy, so-called because two hydrogen nuclei are fused together, has long been heralded as the answer. The hydrogen bomb has been with us since 1952 but unlike fission atomic reaction scientists have been unable to develop a technique which allows fusion to be controlled and provide more energy than that which is used to release it. However, as BBC radio (8/3/10) claims, recent research funding levels and progress suggest we may be on the cusp of a breakthrough in 2010.

Beast Factories
Jonathan Safran Foer's 2009 book Eating Animals could and should put you off factory-farmed meat for life. One wonders how many of us already know at least some of this but choose to push it out of mind. The following brief description is of chicken factory-farming in the US but the issues relate to the farming of pigs, cattle, other poultry and fish world-wide. For specific information about the UK contact viva.
