Sir Fusion of Energy and the Holy Grail

fushion2.jpgGiven ever-approaching Peak Oil and worldwide concern over carbon emissions causing global warming the dream of clean, safe and bountiful energy becomes more intense. Fusion energy, so-called because two hydrogen nuclei are fused together, has long been heralded as the answer. The hydrogen bomb has been with us since 1952 but unlike fission atomic reaction scientists have been unable to develop a technique which allows fusion to be controlled and provide more energy than that which is used to release it. However, as BBC radio (8/3/10) claims, recent research funding levels and progress suggest we may be on the cusp of a breakthrough in 2010.

Confusing guidance for business

cyclone.jpgEnvironmental Finance reports that companies are struggling to comprehend the thirty-odd number of guidelines for reporting their carbon footprints. Executives at a meeting of lobby group the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) in London this week reiterated the need to agree a common method for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This comes as governments worldwide are introducing emissions legislation and major companies, such as Wal-Mart and Tesco, begin to demand that suppliers report the carbon impact of their products.

Beast Factories

chicken.jpgJonathan Safran Foer's 2009 book Eating Animals could and should put you off factory-farmed meat for life. Interweaving memoir, history, science and philosophy Foer avoids lecturing and surprises with stories of the extent of his research. Many of the facts revealed are simply repulsive. One wonders how many of us already know at least some of this but choose to push it out of mind. The following brief description is of chicken factory-farming in the US but the issues relate to the farming of pigs, cattle, other poultry and fish world-wide. For specific information about the UK contact viva.

More scandal diluting the message

cyclone.jpgAll very unhelpful are the scandals surrounding the IPCC report, which has fueled more scepticism over climate change science and damages any progress towards greater sustainability.  Trouble began when a misprint of a prediction about the Himalayan glaciers was found.  The report said the glaciers could melt by 2035 if climate change went unchecked, but it should have stated 2350.

Call for higher carbon price

commonsportcullis.jpgThe Environmental Audit Commission (EAC) has published its third report on the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), in which it calls for moves to support a higher price for carbon.  The main argument focuses on the over-allocation of carbon allowances in Phase I of the ETS, surpluses being carried over into Phase II which has combined with the economic recession to encourage business-as-usual.

A fitter you and a fitter planet

dogsnow.jpgChristine's New Year Resolution (Tip No.11): Happy New Year to you all – Hogmanay has always been a time for looking back on the past year, and more so looking forward to the coming year.  It’s also time to think about the changes we want to make or we should make and try to follow through. Now back at work, if you like me are feeling guilty about the excesses over Christmas – this is probably a time millions of us decide to give up fatty foods, alcohol and decide to join a gym and get fit. International network for climate justice

drought.jpgClimate Justice Now! is a network of organisations and movements from across the globe committed to the fight for social, ecological and gender justice. The network is based on the understanding that, while climate change requires global action, the historical responsibility for the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions over the past 250 years lies with the industrialised countries of the North. Cheap energy – in the form of oil, coal and gas – has been the engine of their rapid industrialisation and economic growth.
