 An article in the Scotland on Sunday (7 Feb 2010) highlighted the disparity in what is called healthy life expectancy, the part of life that enjoys 'good' health. Glasgow men and women faired worst in this regard with those living in remote and rural communties such as Orkney and Shetland doing better.
Year on year the figure's creep up for both this and overall life expectancy (the bit where we pass from this life). However, Scotland is still regarded as the 'sick man' of Europe.Much ho-ha amongst politicians this last week about proposals to raise the retirement age. A good thing or a bad thing, I'd leave that to others to speculate. But I vaguely remember there was a another report that looked at the time line between stopping work and death that suggested we should keep working for the good of our health. The current arguement seems to be about money.
