cyclelaneThe streets of Glasgow City Centre were packed with bicycles rather than cars yesterday as 13,000 cyclists participated in the second annual SkyRide event in Scotland.  With the aim of promoting the benefits of staying fit and healthy, broadcasting company Sky, have so far held seven mass cycling events with a further five planned this summer.  SkyRide’s target is to get a further 1 million people regularly cycling by 2013.   

The event was enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels along with ambassadors Chris Hoy and Loraine Kelly who completing the 8.1km route with a round trip starting at Glasgow Green going all the way to the SECC.  The Skyride Entertainment Village in Glasgow Green provided an alternative, less strenuous form of entertainment with live music and dance acts for the cyclists to enjoy.     

Disappointed not to have taken part yesterday or indeed interested in taking part in future cycling events you need not worry: SkyRide have organised 30 smaller events to be held around Glasgow every Sunday into October with riders being treated to historical and art cycle tours, as well as trips to the countryside and around famous landmarks.  Interested?
