A recent Channel 4 programme featured a man who takes waste management to whole new extreme. He totally and completely believes that we live in the ultimate throw away society and his answer is to collect it all and keep it...just in case. The quantity of material that Richard Wallis has accumulated is testament to his belief about our over consumption. But it is clear that where concern ramps up to the point of obsession, things can get seriously out of hand.
Richard's obsession causes him difficulties with his neighbours as the materials he hoards are now visible to all as they spill all over his garden. But with the help and understanding of some of his neighbours he appears to begin to overcome some of his obsessive behaviour.
It does seem sad that few people have sought to help him or to understand his motivation in the past. Indeed some in his community are more concerned about the appearance of their community than the waste it produces or the wellbeing of all its residents.
