waveA long time ago Scotland led the world with its hydro technology and we might even have been on a path to sustainable energy. Alas things did not go the way of the pioneers and the rest is history. However the 21st Century brings new opportunities and some have been pushing micro renewables.

It is widely reported that Scotland has huge sources of renewable energy.  With the increasing efficiency of much smaller, micro-schemes, a local solution may be at hand. In Glen Lyon in Perthshire, landowners first started using micro-hydro schemes a very long time ago since they could not get access to the national grid. These very old systems produced enough for the estates but not much more. Today, they’re installing the latest generation of equipment, burying it under-ground, which will allow them to export significant amounts of electricity to the grid. They have the backing of Scottish and Southern Energy and have just persuaded the Forestry Commission to give them an exclusive deal to let them build similar schemes in the Highlands, from Inverness to Skye and North towards Durness.

RE: Making Micro Hydro work
written by Chris Ferne , 2010-09-08 22:52:11
Hydro is so much more efficient than these politically-motivated and hopelessly inefficient wind turbines - but let's not forget that the Hydro was essentially a job-creation scheme in an austere post-war Britain. Any expert will confirm that Scotland doesn't have an ideal hydro climate or geography like Norway. Wave power is the best hope but ever-expanding populations may yet force us into nuclear...
