For those interested in sustainable travel solutions there is a Demand Responsive Transport event at the Sheraton in Edinburgh on the 19th November 2008.

The Angus Transport Forum delivered a highly successful European funded DRT project where it explored the potential that awaits to be unlocked by offering communities greater choices and opportunities to access better public transport. The key to community DRT is that it does not seek to supplant public transport provision but compliments and augments provision.

According to the 2005 National Transport Strategy, “1% or less of those in rural areas and remote small towns had access to a regular bus service (at least one bus every 13 minutes) compared with 44% in large urban areas”.

Despite the fact that 85 per cent of Scots live six minutes from a bus stop, car ownership remains high. But do these bus stops run to where individuals want to go? Or at the times they need to get there? Attend this unique one-day event and hear from a range of policy makers, campaigners and practitioners about the potential for flexible transport services to deliver for Scotland.

It therefore not only has great potential in our rural communities where scheduled provision is at its most challenging but more widely it can reduce car journeys, empty vehicle movements and provide access to some of the most vulnerable in society.

This event brings together experts from across Scotland.

In a society that embraces sustainable development, the solutions for our 20th century legacy of unsustainable behaviours lie with our new leaders in communities and that DRT and community DRT is very much part of that solution.
