The project proposal focuses on the purchase and demolition of a derelict building that is viewed as a local eyesore. The building had previously been the local police office, and then had been bought by a local bookmaker for use as a betting shop. However, a licence to run a betting shop on the site was not granted and the building has remained empty for several years and has become a bone of contention within the community.
Overview
The alley and forecourt of the building has become associated with crime and the area attracts the highest number of crime call outs in Dundee. The building sits alongside a green space site that is currently used as the local village green; following the demolition of the building the village green will be extended. The new community garden will include: native shrubs; a new entrance footpath which will be angled and surfaced to be suitable for people with disabilities; new railings; a new bin; feature paving; and more seating. New lighting will be placed on site to make the area safer, and it is hoped that the improved square will be used for community activities e.g. choir singing, fundraising, local fetes and awareness events.260 local children and young people will be involved in the creation of a community art sculpture that will be placed on site when completed. The public unveiling of this sculpture will be the launch event for the new garden when complete. Children at 6 local primary schools will create the sculpture, plans at the moment are to build a cairn which will enclose a time capsule, this will be opened in 50 years time at a celebration event.
