The project aimed to examine, sort and interpret the large collection of prehistoric and medieval material found on Orkney and and making it available as a teaching and handling collection for use by schools and community groups.

When Cruicks Quarry in North Queensferry expanded in the 1970s, the operators built a new Ferryhills Road and modified part of the old road to retain access to the lane serving certain properties. Unfortunately, the camber of the lane junction was poorly designed, making it extremely difficult for vehicles to drive round the 120-degree corner, especially in poorer weather conditions. Lorries in particular found it difficult to negotiate the steep uphill slope even in dry weather. The project aims to improve the road camber by infilling it with bottoming material, compacting and tarmacing.

The project involves the transformation of an area of waste ground (1.5 hectares) close to an operational quarry into a community garden where local school children can study the diverse wildlife in the area and local residents can sit and enjoy the natural environment.
