It seems like everyday we wake up to the effects of our unsustainable behaviours.

The financial crisis/credit crunch, whatever you choose to call things is the legacy of years of irresponsible economic activity. It suggests that currently the reality of so called sustainable economic growth is a bit of an oxymoron.

Not the most exciting decision I've had to take recently, but I had to replace an old Hotpoint machine after it had got REALLY NOISY.  Bearings were away, and it wasn't worth fixing after over 10 years good service, including two young boys through washable nappies!  I'd been able to fix a couple of things myself previously, including the door release and the carbon brushes on the motor, but this I felt this was beyond me, and only likely to put off the day I'd have to bite the bullet anyway.

Wellbeing a lot better than GDP as a measure of progress Print E-mail

Forward Scotland rejects the premise that economic growth, as expressed by GDP should be the principle means of measuring progress. A nation that embraces the principles of sustainable development would seek to achieve a more equitable balance between the spheres of the environment, the economy and society. 
Our latest research with partners the Scottish Council Foundation discusses and proposes a a basket of subjective indicators which could be used as an alternative to GDP. We think it makes sense to explore these kinds of topics and challenge traditional thinking.
